By myself, I can envision a future, with a team we can make the vision occur and greater than one imagined. In today's world, projects are completed by interdependent empowered specialists. Business objectives are achieved by the collaborative efforts of teamwork. The team maybe comprised of individuals across departments, but the individuals are accountable for facets of the overall goal.
This is why it is critical to develop a well performing team including the sponsor. Teams which are subdivided with a "me" versus the "others" mentality need to be transformed into teams which celebrate the differences, matching the right skill with the right deliverable. Individuals on the team need to be trusted and trusting. Once a task is appropriately assigned, the individual will need to be able to complete the task at hand. If It is unclear, the individual should feel comfortable asking questions of others. If there is a red flag, the individual should feel comfortable and have a know venue for raising the flag. The individual should not feel the need to circumspect and redo other teammates work because of different approaches. Checking in to assure there are opportunities to share progress or ideas with the team is welcomed and the purpose of project status updates.
As a project manager, one is aware that only collaborating with others can the end goal be realized. An atmosphere of trust and accountability needs to be in place in order to develop teamwork. Design opportunities to develop the team including the vendor, sponsor, and business departments and watch the relationships develop. At the end of the day, when you are looking to measure and qualify success, and performance improvement opportunities, be sure to keep in mind it's a team effort. Measure the collaboration of the team in the customer satisfaction survey, not did we do this, do that or do this?
