We have all looked around and noticed our staff needs a little motivation. Maybe it is getting that new practice in place, perhaps it is just inspiring a new habit or behavior. Motivation is a part of a manager and leaders daily job, perhaps Eisenhower stated it best:

"Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it."

-- Dwight D. Eisenhower

To motivate colleagues, and get them pointed and rolling down the right road, there are three good practices to follow:

  1. Have clear attainable goals - Goals need to be clearly relayed and understood by all. Goals should not be a yearly reviewed item, they should be reviewed bi-monthly and strove towards. Nothing is a de-motivating as not working towards a purpose or outcome. Always remember the what is in it for me perspective, find the right goal/achievement combination.

  2. Use a compelling reason - Everyone needs to have an emotional tie to why we are changing. A awe inspiring tale which has appeal up and down the organizational hierarchy is best.

  3. Inspire for the outcome - Be prepared to continue to energize and motivate the team through out the long hall of transformation. Have people crave the cookie at the of a long atkins diet.
