Have problem for which the cause is nebulous? Let's look at how to use our old friend the fishbone diagram. The fishbone diagram is a simple picture which portrays all of the possible cause of a problem within a process.
How to use the fishbone diagram:
- Label the Problem - If your team is being plagued by a problem, identify the problem and place it at the head of the fishbone.
- Categorize the major causes - Name the primary causes. With a manufacturing process, we use mining the Ms - Materials, Machinery, Measurements, Methods, and Manpower. For a service problem, we use pursuing the Ps - Provisions, Place, Patrons, Processes, and Personnel.
- Brainstorming - Next it is good to have a brainstorming session with the team about probable causes.
- Write down the probable causes - After the brainstorming session, a team member should complete the fishbone diagram. This positions a great team discussion on the problem and its possible causes.
- Establish priorities - We all can't do everything now a days, so let's focus our efforts on the three most likely causes and deep dive into analysis on the prioritized causes.
Being able to facilitate the creation of a fishbone diagram in a team environment is a useful skill to have in your technique chest. It can really clarify problem solving.
