A sad statement on our bleeding edge and niche vendors in healthcare it, is that I can count 1 - 2 vendor demonstrations for which the product only works through powerpoint on a overhead projector. We have commonly begun to refer to the products as vaporware.

Truth be told, several of these are innovative ideas from conferences to help resolve problems which have not been the forefront of implementations. However, let's discuss a tried and true mechanism to the selection/acquisition process - a day in the life scenarios. After you have gone through the RFI and RFPs, you have proposals and are probably down to at most 3 vendors. Now is the time to see demonstrations, but it is very important to provide a day in the life scenario or three.

Day in the life scenarios, walk through and demonstrate the process in detail for how it will work in real life. For example if you are looking to implement an ER system, it would be good to walk through the triage registration process, patient tracking, nurse and physician charting, ordering/results, discharging, and charging. Have a Joe Doe who left without being seen, a broken arm, and perhaps a medicare cardiac inpatient admit.

The value of comparing similar scenarios on the vendor's product is indispensable. It is well worth the time of the selection team to develop the scenarios
