Ever play bridge? Depending on the cards you are dealt, depends on how you play your hand. As you contract, you also gain an understanding of the circumstances based upon collaboration with your partner, and hearing the contracting of the other team. Dealing with operational risks is the same type of understanding, when you first look around, you begin to observe circumstances. This system seems to go down quite a bit, not a lot of processes exist here, maybe even individuals seem caught in a 70's show utopia. Seeing a bit of a picture?

Operational Risk Assessment

Depending upon the cost and impact of the risk, really depends upon how you handle the risk. For example, staff members not familiar with the security policy on ePHI is an intolerable risk and has little cost to handle, so it should just be dealt with through education and consequences discussions. However, the fact that archaic billing system is legacy and customized beyond belief, may just be something you have to tolerate because of the expense and operation impact to replace.

As a manager, one has to identify when the risk and costs are worth the rewards and benefits. This is one of the key aspects of information services management.
