As we are getting ready to run a marathon on the dash for cash from ARRA, it is time to look at the brutal facts regarding your organization's project execution culture. After all it is going to be all about the execution and adoption of a culture change for the EHR Implementation.

Looking at past projects or current initiatives, for these projects how were they planned and launched?

  • No internal project schedule development or role assignment. "We plan as we go" attitude is adopted in the culture. If this is a common scenario, truth be told you have a bright glaring red flag of organizational risk for readiness.

  • The only plan to be found and followed is the vendors. Heck we have even outsourced the project management to the same vendor doing the implementation. If this is common, please display the yellow flag of readiness risk.

  • The project plan was internally developed with a team of individuals including the vendor, project team, and sponsors. A steering committee was implemented with active engagement. If this is the case for the larger projects of the past, your culture is ready for a project execution.
  • The successful project is planned. Projects are commonly done one of two ways. Planned then executed. Executed, stopped, planned then executed. If you need to get your organization there, it is time to start a change campaign.
