The next item we need to move forward on our way to taming a chaotic project management culture is to establish organization wide decision criteria. Our first place to look is at the overall strategic plan. The strategic plan should help us provide the pillars our healthcare organization is looking to develop over the next 3 to 5 years.
I personally like to categorize the decision criteria into the 5 pillars of healthcare - Service, Financial, Growth, People, Quality and Safety. I believe it positions nicely to a balanced scorecard in the long run, but have not explored that option to date. Back to the topic at hand, let's place in the recommended decision criteria. It is just easier to give individuals a first look and feel, while welcoming their insights.
Now here is the hard part, vetting the decision criteria so everyone agrees these are good measures to establish project prioritization. However the good news is we already have a form for vetting the decision. Previously, we obtained the gap between how IT is now, and how the business would like IT in the future. We obtained a format for reviewing with director leadership and the C-suite. We also provided an action plan to resolve disconnect. One of the key action item will be crafting decision criteria.
The review is also a place to preliminarily test your governance towers.

Good Leadership will quickly relate to the need, and be helpful in fine-tuning the decision criteria. Once everyone has agreed to the criteria, you have a key component to taming chaotic project management. Soon on Anticlue, we will talk about which process structures can be constructed with this foundational piece.
