Managing project scope requires a planning. The project scope is the foundation of all other project management activities and processes. The project scope management processes are:
- Scope Planning – Scope Planning is all about developing the Project Scope Management Plan. A document that provides how scope will be defined, verified, and controlled. In addition there are elements to discuss how the WBS will be created and defined.
- Scope Definition – Scope Definition is the preparation of a detailed Project Scope Statement.
- Create WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) – Creating the Work Breakdown Structure breaks the project deliverables and tasks into smaller and more manageable components.
- Scope Verification – Scope Verification is the way to provide a quality assurance check by stating how project deliverables will be validated and approved.
- Scope Control – Scope Control revolves around controlling and managing any changes to the project scope. This is a check and balance to assure the approved scope was implemented.
Now we come to the every popular when and where question. When and where do these processes occur in the five Project Process Groups?
These project scope management processes are interrelated with the five Project Process Groups as follows:
- Initiating Process Group - None of the project scope management processes are found in in the Initiating Process Group.
- Planning Process Group - Scope Planning, Scope Definition, and Creating the WBS occur in this process group.
- Executing Process Group - None are found in this process Group.
- Monitoring and Controlling Process Group - Scope Verification and Scope Control are done within this process group.
- Closing Process Group - The closing process group does not contain any planning scope processes.
As a pm, it is important to know understand how to fight the evil scope creep. Knowing the project scope management process is a key factor in your fight.
