Good News, we have a Work Breakdown Structure, now all we need is to set a realistic timeline to accomplish the necessary activities. An activity refers to the component of work performed during the course of a project. There are several project time management activity processes that help organize your project to assure a timely completion.

During the activity definition, work packages in the WBS are further detailed into their activities. This helps to provide accurate estimates and improved management control. The output of this process is an Activity List. An activity list is a comprehensive list of all the activities necessary to complete the project.

The companion to the Activity list is the list of Activity Attributes. This normally includes:

  • activity identifiers like codes and descriptions
  • schedule and resource data
  • identified assumptions and constraints
  • the responsible party
  • work location
  • WBS classification
  • activity type

The final output of the Activity Definition process is the Milestone List of significant events in the project.
The sequence of activities is critical to any project. Activity Sequencing is the process of logically organizing the activity list while being cognizant of interactivity dependencies, leads and lags. The outcome of this process is an input to the Schedule Development process.

The Activity Resource Estimating process obtains what resources each project activity will require, starting from the most granular level of the WBS. Often Activity Resource Estimating is completed in accordance with Cost Estimating, because resources involve money.

The Activity Resource Estimating process yields what resources and quantities are required for each project activity, the Activity Resource Requirements. Other outputs are the Resource Breakdown Structure and a resource calendar.

Activity Duration Estimating is the process of estimating the number of work periods that will be needed to complete individual schedule activities. One should create duration estimated based upon the follow information:

  • Enterprise Environmental Factors
  • Organizational Process Assets
  • Activity List
  • Activity Attributes
  • Project Scope Statement
  • Activity Resource Requirements
  • Resource Calendar
  • Project Management Plan with cost estimates and a risk register.

During the schedule development process, schedule-related assumptions and constraints from the Project Scope Statement are evaluated in light of setting start and finish dates for project work. The output of the Schedule development process is an approved project schedule with a baseline.

Additional another output is the Schedule Model Data. This is the supporting details such as alternative schedules, extra time, and identified assumptions and constraints.
