Reid Coleman, M.D., medical informatics officer at Lifespan, Providence, R.I. Coleman led implementation of computerized physician order entry at Lifespan, a multi-hospital delivery system.

* Kenneth Fath, M.D., cardiologist and medical director of performance improvement and medical informatics at Alamance Regional Medical Center, Burlington, N.C. Fath championed the introduction of computerized physician order entry and assisted in the selection of an electronic medical records system from Eclipsys Corp.

* Charles Frazier, M.D., director of medical informatics at Riverside Health System, Newport News, Va. Frazier developed a secure physician-patient communications Web portal. He also has developed a referral tracking application and a competency-based medical resident appraisal system that was purchased by the American Board of Family Practice.

* Dario Guise, professor at Vanderbilt University Medical School in Nashville, Tenn. He designed, tested and implemented an electronic medical records system. The electronic records system includes a workflow integration tool that enables Vanderbilt University Medical Center physicians to access patient information, schedules, and test results, and supports communication by electronic messaging.

* Thomas Hughes, M.D., Fullerton, Calif. Hughes led implementation of an electronic medical records system in his seven-physician practice, and led implementation of a clinical information system at St. Jude Medical Center, also in Fullerton. He is "physician champion" of an information system overhaul and upgrade across all 14 hospitals and medical centers in the Orange, Calif.-based St. Joseph Health System.

* Central Utah Multi-Specialty Clinic, Provo. The clinic implemented an electronic medical records system from Allscripts Healthcare Solutions.

* Columbia Basin Health Association, Othello, Wash. The community health center implemented an electronic medical records system from ChartLogic Inc. across three clinics.

* MIT Medical at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass. The provider-payer organization implemented an electronic medical records system from Allscripts Healthcare Solutions.

* Memorial Health University Medical Center, Savannah, Ga. The delivery system implemented a physician Web portal, spearheaded by CIO Steve Stanic. The portal enables physicians and other clinicians to access patient data including medications, vital signs, rounding reports, alerts and mobile messaging via a core health information system from McKesson Corp.

* Nevada Army National Guard Air Ambulance Unit. The air ambulances use PDAs from PalmOne Inc. and patient data collection software from Med-Media Inc. The technology enables air ambulance medics to list military and civilian patient vital signs, record treatment and medications received, and note initial diagnoses while on board UH-40 Black Hawk helicopters. The unit was most recently deployed in Afghanistan.
