The Evil Side of IT Governance
CIO.com has an article on IT Governance gone bad entitled, Stop Measuring Performance and Get Something Done. It lists a couple of stories including one manager who instead of working with the customer department, reported the departments failure to provide requirements for the project within the IT Governance Reports.
IT Governance is basically common sense, and working on the work at hand is also basically common sense. The article is incorrect in stating "Stand up and deliver—because well done is always better than well said" That's not really true, you can be doing a fabulous job maintaining the operation so that everything seem seemless, but if no one in the customer community knows that or your manager, then the work has no value until you are not there to do it.
IT professionals need to be good at communicating the work being completed and doing the actual work. The trick is balancing the two items and still being a valued resource to the institution.
