EMR & Time constraints

An interesting tid bit I came across today was a statistic for patient "face time" with physicians. The statistic was that for an hour spent on site about 30 percent of that time is spent with a physician in some practices.

So why am I interested here? Clinicians do hard good work, they don't need to be buried in a dump of procedural documentation and forms. If the "face time" with physician is that low in a practice setting, I'm guessing it is lower in a hospital situation.

When looking at implementing an EMR, remember that clinicians time is valuable and the purpose of the system to allow the user a way to maximize use of their time. Seriously how much would you like to utilize a system that encumbers you?

As I understand it, that was the chief complaint made by the users who revolted against the PCX system at Cedars -Sinai.
