The ripple of change
Let's take a minute to consider the ripple of change. A change occurs in one place, a small insignificant change, then the ripple effect occurs. It turns out that a small insignificant drop, has many ripples in a calm pond.
Due to othis ripple of change, highly consider communication as a part of the change management process. Have a group that gets together to consider the changes going into production, and communicates the impact of those changes.
Also no matter how insignificant a change appears, always test it elsewhere first. And always have a backup for when you are implementing the change. It is just good sense and provides an excellent cross training opportunity.
Finally have at least two ways to back out a change. In technology surprises occur, and it is best if you can back them out with minimal downtime effects to the institution.
