Keeping on top of things

With technology changing at a rapid pace, sometimes its hard to remain on top of new ideas and technologies.

Lately, I haven't had any coding time at work, so I probably spend about an hour a day at home, surfing and reading on new technology. I have found that I enjoy reading the various ways to accomplish something. (I've also figured out I need to build another room for a library) I also have discovered, that I like to lay the foundation first, before delving into high end concepts. Guess I'm a crawl before you run type.

I do think technologists have to a responsibility to keep up with the latest concepts. However, people have various learning styles. Adults learn best by doing normally, which is what training classes provide. So I wonder, how do others keep abreast of new technologies? Please share.

Hi,

I have created a web site which contains blogs/web site of various subjects (cf,java,.net,xml...) and try to read at least an 1 hour a day to keep abreast of new stuff. When I find a new blog, I just add it to my web site. It seems more organized than using favorites.

Easy. Go buy FeedDemon from Bradbury software. Add as many RSS/XML feeds to it as you like. I've organized all my most important feeds into one channel group. If you get the CNET technology feeds, Slashdot, the Register, Ars Technica, and a few others, you will pretty much be on top of things. I've added alot of Macromedia related blogs into Feeddemon so I'm continually on top of whats going on in the web dev world - from a MM perspective anyhow.cheers

You can also use SharpReader from http://www.sharpreader.net but you will need to install .NET framework
