Open Source Software

Open Source sometimes has a unnecessary stigma attached to it. There is a large difference between Open Source software and unsupported software. Sometimes organizations need to leverage open source as a part of their repetoire, when they have enough support, and individuals with time to master it.

For example, linux is an excellent open-source product, and you can purchase support of the os from various vendors. (IE redhat)

It also depends upon the adoption period, if you are a bleeding edge, you will have a higher risk exposure, than if you are at least cutting edge or waiting for the technology to stabilize.

For a thought provoking article on open-source and its advantages, Forrester Research has compiled the open-source strategy.
